Kids with Different Needs

Adam’s Camp Nantucket
Recreational Programs for Youth
Imagine your child’s joy when soaring down a zipline, hitting a bulls-eye for the first time, navigating through the Colorado River white rapids, or exploring all metro Denver has to offer. These activities are all a part of Adam’s Camp’s recreational programs, designed to develop the courage to try new things while increasing independence and confidence.

Autism Speaks, Nanucket Chapter
The Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center offers programs which are open to families of individuals with any disability, not limited to autism, and we welcome siblings to all of our events. We plan social activities for the entire family to help lessen the isolation, including family dinners; movie dates; respite opportunities to help parents get much-needed time to themselves; parent support groups and other parent-to-parent networking opportunities; mixers and theme activities with Perfect Pals, our high school mentoring club for students with special needs; educational workshops to help improve the quality of our families’ lives; and a host of summer-time activities, such as sailing and surfing lessons, theater productions, harbor cruises and more. We also provide a Babysitter and Companion List of experienced and mature adults. We are currently sharing an office in the high school, so please call or email to make an appointment to meet with the director to problem-solve or consult, borrow books and dvd’s.

Early Intervention
Early Intervention provides family-centered services to help children who qualify to develop the skills they will need to continue to grow into happy and healthy members of the community.
Early Intervention has a team of therapists who live on Nantucket and meet with families daily. If you have a concern about your child (under three) meeting developmental milestones, call to schedule a free assessment.

Isle Return Program
Isle Return is a voluntary program on Nantucket that benefits residents and visitors with Alzheimer’s, Autism or other conditions who are at risk of wandering.
Caring for someone who wanders is a considerable responsibility. Nothing could be more frightening than the thought of a loved one with Alzheimer’s, Autism, cognitive impairment or other condition becoming lost.
Isle Return Program helps Nantucket’s public safety agencies manage the challenge of searching for and rescuing people who may wander. The program is geared toward ensuring a safe return for missing disabled residents and visitors of all ages.
Enrolling a loved one in the Isle Return Program helps caregivers provide an added layer of protection for loved ones with cognitive conditions from the potentially life-threatening behavior of wandering. Please click here for registration information.

STAR Nantucket
Sports & Therapeutic/Accessible Recreation
Our mission is to provide specialized, therapeutic, accessible recreation, and adaptive sports to children with a wide range of challenges and disabilities.
Our goal is to leave no child left behind due to the degree of challenges, be it physical, mental, emotional, or neurological.
Our history began in 2003 when the program was founded by Renee Gamberoni and Max Goode. Seeing a great need in our community for recreation and sports for children with special needs, the Nantucket S.T.A.R. Program was formed. Now, alongside their peers, children on Nantucket with special needs have access to sports, after-school activities and play-groups.
